Can Aureal detect AI-generated or deepfake audio?
No. Aureal is not a synthetic-speech or deepfake classifier. It detects a keyed watermark that someone embedded in the audio, so it can trace marked copies. A missing watermark does not show the audio is human, and a present one does not show it is AI-generated; it only shows the mark is there.
How Aureal handles it
A synthetic-speech detector is a classifier: it generalises from learned features to an estimate about how the audio was made. Aureal does the opposite. It correlates the samples with a key-derived sequence and reports whether its own codeword is present. If an AI voice provider embedded an Aureal ID, the detector can recover that ID and trace the generation record. If the provider used no mark, a different watermark, or the mark was removed by re-recording, denoising, a short clip or a codec, the detector finds nothing. Absence is not evidence that the audio is human, and presence is not evidence that it is synthetic.
Common failure mode
“Aureal can tell whether a voice is AI-generated by scanning for its watermark.”
Why it fails: The detector only knows its own keyed codeword. It has no model of synthetic speech and cannot classify unmarked audio. A marked human recording would match; an unmarked synthetic recording would not. The result describes the presence of a mark, not the origin of the voice.
Verified example
Write the result at signal level:
"The file carries watermark ID 883921 under the supplied key"
or
"No watermark was detected under the supplied key".
Do not write "AI-generated", "human" or "deepfake" from a watermark result.
If origin matters, use a provenance record, a classifier evaluated for that task, and the applicable disclosure rules.
Example only. Validate against your own audio, codec and processing chain.
Scope and limits
- No synthetic-speech or deepfake classification.
- Only detects an Aureal-compatible mark under the matching key.
- A missing mark does not prove the audio is human.
- A present mark does not prove the audio is AI-generated.
Frequently asked questions
Can it detect audio from a specific AI voice vendor?
Only if that vendor embedded an Aureal-compatible watermark with the key you hold, or the file carries one from another step in the chain. Aureal has no vendor-specific classifier and cannot identify a model from an unmarked file.
Does a missing watermark prove the audio is real?
No. The mark may never have been embedded, may have been removed by processing, or the clip may be too short. Absence is not evidence of human origin; it is only the absence of this signal under this key.
